Stretford Local History Society
Stretford Local History Society
held its first meeting in March 1982 and exists to encourage interest in
the history of Stretford and the area around by lectures, visits and undertaking
projects. The society produces a publication, Stretford Chronicle, at intervals
and has written three books containing old photographs of the area. At
present the membership is around seventy. The society meets at the Public
Hall, Chester Road , Stretford at 7.30 pm on the third Thursday of the
month, except June and August. A visit is usually organised in June. Visitors
are welcome.

The society is a member of the British
Association for Local History and also the Lancashire Local History Federation.

Stretford is located on the south side of Manchester
close to the large industrial area of Trafford Park and has changed
over the years from a rural to a densely populated area as industry developed,
encouraged by the construction of the Bridgewater Canal, the Manchester
Ship Canal and the railway network.
